August 12, 2022 — Project Angel Food Director of Programs Robert Boller announced today that Project Angel Food will immediately begin delivering Medically Tailored Meals to Angelenos who have been diagnosed with the monkeypox virus and are forced to isolate.

Founded in 1989 during the height of the AIDS crisis, Project Angel Food has served in some of the most difficult times and continues to serve those with critical illnesses — monkeypox has now been added to that list.

California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a State of Emergency on August 1 to help bolster the fight against monkeypox. According to the California Department of Public Health, the state currently (as of August 9) has more than 1,700 monkeypox cases with more than 600 in Los Angeles, the most of any local health jurisdiction in California.

As monkeypox continues to unravel, Project Angel Food is now offering service to those afflicted with this illness. Eligible clients will receive up to a month of Medically Tailored Meals during their isolation.

Clients will receive an initial delivery of 14 meals, a breakfast bag, and a fruit bag — and a second delivery if the isolation period persists. Deliveries will be made to the client’s home and will be contactless.

The regular application process will be waived in order to facilitate immediate support when a client is isolating. A person needing this service, or a member of their health care team, should call Client Services at (323) 845-1810 for a telephonic intake.

Project Angel Food strives to end food insecurity and improve health outcomes of critically ill men, women, and children in Los Angeles County. The organization delivers Medically Tailored Meals, with care and compassion, directly to their homes. More than 2,500 clients are fed daily, with over 1.2 million meals delivered each year. Project Angel Food is a Four-Star Charity Navigator rating and has been declared an essential service by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.
