Project Angel Food nourishes the health and spirit of vulnerable people facing critical and life-threatening illness, by preparing and delivering medically tailored meals with love, care and dignity.
We serve men, women, and children throughout all of Los Angeles County who are debilitated by serious illnesses and cannot shop or cook for the food they need to survive and heal. They are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, congestive heart failure, COPD, diabetes, end-stage renal disease, HIV/AIDS, stroke-cardiovascular accident and/or other serious diseases. Many are struggling with two or more illnesses.
Our corps of 4,700+ volunteers and generous donors who fund our work are at the heart of our mission. They enable client services, administration, nutrition and kitchen staff to provide life-saving meals to 2,400+ seriously ill people in need.
We make more than 1.5 million meals per year. We have cooked and delivered more than 18 million meals to date.

Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) is used to determine the nutrition diagnosis, and develop nutrition interventions and counseling specific for the individual. It is an essential part of comprehensive healthcare that can aid individuals with a variety of illnesses and conditions improve their health.
Nutrition assessments are conducted by Registered Dietitians on staff to help figure out which meals are the best fit for you. We will ask you about your height, weight, medication, physical activity, appetite, food allergies, and how you are eating in general. We will also address any additional questions, and together develop ways to address your specific nutrition and health concerns.
Based on the information discussed in the nutrition assessment, we may contact you as soon as three to four months, but typically most of our clients get a call back from the Dietitian in six to 12 months to reassess how they are doing and to address any additional concerns. If you have any questions or concerns, call us at 323.845.1800.
You need to complete the nutrition assessment before your first meals can be delivered. Once the nutrition assessment has been completed, it takes one to two weeks to get your first delivery.
You can store our frozen meals in the freezer for three to four months. Do not thaw and then re-freeze, as you can be putting yourself at risk for food borne illness.
Meals can be thawed in the refrigerator up to 24 hours before reheating it. They can also be thawed in the microwave, but they must be fully cooked and eaten that same day. Meals should never be thawed in the sink, on the counter, or anywhere not refrigerated.
Directly from the freezer – It may take up to six to seven minutes to fully reheat the meal, depending on the power of your microwave. Be aware that side items like noodles or veggies may cook faster than the main entrée like chicken or lasagna.
After thawing– The meal should take three to four minutes to fully reheat, depending on the power of your microwave.
