LOS ANGELES (Feb. 27, 2025) — Project Angel Food’s ANGEL ART benefit auction united the worlds of entertainment and art on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2025, at Bonhams Los Angeles on Sunset Boulevard. Partnering with the esteemed international auction house Bonhams, 100% of the auction's proceeds were directed to Project Angel Food’s crucial efforts to feed L.A.’s critically ill following the devastating Los Angeles wildfires.
Melissa Rivers, who lost her home in the Palisades fire, opened the program and shared with the 175 attendees that Angel Art held special significance for her after the loss of her generational art collection in the fire. “I’m a firm believer that we who love art don’t own art. Being allowed to be the custodian of it is so important. For me, in the fires, the thing that has been haunting me is the loss not just of my home but of my art.” She began rebuilding her collection, purchasing one of the lots in the silent auction.
Lori Loughlin, a Project Angel Food volunteer for more than four years, made a rare red carpet appearance and said of the fires, “What restores your faith in humanity is when the chips are down, people do come together. They do rally around each other and that’s a beautiful thing.”
Also in attendance were Rachel Lindsay, Sandra Lee, Sam Asghari, Michael Corbett, Ava Maybee, Gregory Zarian, Trisha Cardoso, President and Chief Giving Officer of The Chuck Lorre Family Foundation, and songwriters Allan Rich and 16-time Oscar nominee Diane Warren.
ANGEL ART was launched in 1993 with David Hockney as the Honorary Chair and has been held 22 times in the organization’s history. This year, artist and philanthropist Alexandra Grant, served as Angel Art’s Honorary Chair. She stated, “What Project Angel Food does every day and in days of crisis is the same — care, nourish and feed people. Food is LOVE!”
Artists in attendance included Kwaku Alston, Louis Carreon, Cole Case, Christina Craemer, John Deakers, Mary Fisher, Elizabeth Huey, Mieke Marple, Jim Shaw, Russell Young, and Torie Zalben.
The Bonhams website offered more than 67 lots and took place from Feb. 13-27, 2025. Featured in the live auction were works by Alexandra Grant, Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, John Baldessari, Herb Ritts, Russell Young, Todd Gray, Kwaku Alston, Shepard Fairey, and Salomón Huerta, who lost his home in the Eaton Fire. The highest bidders of the night were Rasha and Stephanie Drachkovitch, Co-CEOs and Founders of 44 Blue, who purchased two live lots: Grant’s LOVE, LOVE, LOVE (blue) and Baldessari’s Hands & Feet: Hands, Baseball & Glove.
Caroline Robinson, Head Auctioneer of Bonhams U.S. said, “The turnout to support Project Angel Food was truly remarkable, with eager bidding on the incredible artworks on offer. The air was electric as everyone in attendance showed their support for the vital relief efforts for the LA fires. There was high-energy participation from all and results showcased the triumph of the event.”
