As Project Angel Food continues to work past maximum capacity by providing more than 1.5 million meals a year to critically ill men, women and children, we are also caring for the essential workers who make it possible to prepare and deliver Medically Tailored Meals to all 4,700 square miles of Los Angeles County, seven days a week. Project Angel Food CEO Richard Ayoub announced that we are increasing our minimum wage to $20.25 in 2023, 23% greater than California’s minimum wage requirement of $15.50.
With inflation at its highest in the last 40 years and COVID-19 still lingering, Project Angel Food is taking this step to recognize the diligence, devotion and hard work of our employees, who also face challenges of rising food and fuel costs. Ayoub says, “Our mission of bringing comfort and hope extends not only to the 2,500 people we serve each day, but also to each one of our valued employees who make this vital work possible.”
Project Angel Food’s new starting hourly rate of $20.25 far surpasses not only the state minimum but the West Hollywood minimum wage rate of $17.50. Project Angel Food Associate Director of Human Resources Francisco Perez says, “We believe in taking care of our employees and in turn, they give us their maximum effort while working here.” In addition to the robust minimum wage, Project Angel Food employees enjoy full medical benefits, 403(b) retirement matches, vacation, holiday and paid sick days. The average tenure of a Project Angel Food employee is more than five years with 25% of our employees surpassing that mark, 14% being with Project Angel for more than 10 years and 8% have been here more than 20 years.
Since its founding in 1989, Project Angel Food has delivered 16 million meals and its thanks to the essential service our employees provide daily. From the kitchen team who cooks and packages the meals, to the delivery drivers who hit the road daily from corner to corner of Los Angeles County, to the staff of registered dietitians who ensure each Medically Tailored Meal is just right for each client, employees are the lifeline of this organization. Despite the workforce growing 48% since 2021, and 4,200 unique volunteers contributing 42,000 hours each year, Project Angel Food is still working at capacity as it cooks and delivers 133,000 Medically Tailored Meals each month.
Project Angel Food strives to end food insecurity and improve health outcomes of seriously ill men, women and children in Los Angeles with Medically Tailored Meals, delivered with care and compassion.
